The setting is an ordinary town in Urban America but manages to build on the underlying current of the just completed US elections which is why even though the book may be fictitious, the story takes on a surreal hue

Things That Happened Before the Earthquake

The book is a debut novel and as such, it is an outstanding piece of work, and a tad unusual which makes this coming of age story all the more enjoyable. The story pans the teen years of Eugenia as she adjusts to life in the US and starts to experiment with drugs, sex and explores the seedy dark underbelly of Los Angeles to the counter culture Topanga Canyon.

Mrs. Fletcher

This book starts with divorced mother Eve fletcher getting a weird message and soon shortly thereafter, Eve starts to explore the world of MILF and porn. The rest of the book follows Eve as she starts pushing the boundaries in her quest for some human contact.

This book explores the life of a multi-cultural couple as they come to terms with their race and identity. The rest of the thriller follows the life of this couple as they continue to grapple with their differences, and the interesting part is that this book uses fantasy as well as one gets to explore the original neighborhood of the other.

Autumn

This biography by Karl encompasses all four seasons of the year and fixates on the ordinary objects as he brings it to sharp focus. The book was written primarily for his unborn daughter and in the sense it paints a rather riveting picture of day to day life. It also contains wonderful illustrations by Vanessa Baird which are riveting on their own, making this book a wonderful read at any time.

a creative approach, outstanding illustrations and a nice take on day to day life

if you are not into autobiographies, even ones that come packed with illustrations, you may want to give this a miss

Eastman Was Here

Inappropriate, egoistical, satirical, and funny are the terms that describe this book perfectly.  From the opening hyperbole about happiness and phallus, Alex’s main protagonist takes you down the road of the weird, the absurd and the witty. The story is set in Ho Chi Minh City in 1973 and follows the life of a journalist and cultural critic as he comes to terms with his own failings one of which happens to be misogyny. Well written and extremely funny at parts.

Sour Heart

This coming of age story concerns newly-arrived Chinese immigrants with their children and the rest of the stories are about their family as they try to adjust to a new country, a new language, alien smells, traditions and customs. What makes this story all the more poignant is that some of the stories paint a vivid picture of Cultural Revolution in China and the aftermath that its citizens had to deal with and their hardships. A definite must read book
