Patricia Cornwell is a critically acclaimed and award-winning American crime novelist. She is best known for her Scarpetta novel series, featuring a tough and crime-solving heroine Dr. Kay Scarpetta. Born as Patricia Carroll Daniels on June 9, 1956, her family moved to North Carolina from Miami, when she was seven, shortly after her parents got separated. After graduating from Davidson College in North Carolina, she took a reporting job in the local newspaper and penned her first book, a biography of Graham. She got married to English professor, Charles Cornwell, in 1980 and the coupled moved to Richmond, Virginia and later got divorced in the year 1988.

In hope of becoming crime novelist, she spent six years studying forensic science and worked at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner as a computer analyst in Richmond, Virginia.
