This book was published by Leo Tolstoy nine years after his first novel and  is rather darker and starker than most of his other novels. It revolves around the main protagonist and his impending death. The book is more philosophical in tone, and captures the essence of death perfectly. If you are a Tolstoy fan you would love this book. It is engrossing to read right from page one to the last page; this is why this book is listed as one of the top 10 books of Leo Tolstoy.
